The GPAS Awarding Ceremony 2019 was held on 24 September 2019 in Cusco, Peru. Seven ports and port authorities from five APEC economies were awarded as APSN Green Port 2019 by review of the GPAS Evaluation Committee and approval of the APSN Council.
The APSN Green Port 2019 was presented by Mr. Tan Cheng Peng, the First Vice-President of the APSN Council, Mr. Fei Weijun, the Secretary-General of APSN, Mrs. María Jara Risco, the Minister of Transport and Communications of Peru, and Mr. Edgar Patiño, the Chairman of the Board of the National Port Authority of Peru, to Laem Chabang Port, Lianyungang Xin Su Gang Terminal, Port of Taichung, Qingdao New Qianwan Container Terminal, Sapangar Bay Container Port, Terminal Internacional del Sur S.A and Terminal Portuario PERU LNG Melchorita.
Laem Chabang Port is the main deep sea port of Thailand, which is operated by the Port Authority of Thailand. The GPAS Evaluation Committee recognized its effective initiatives in sustainable development, renewable energy utilization, environmental protection, social awareness creation and cooperation with the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA). It is noted Laem Chabang Port has set ambitious goals on green port development in future.
Lianyungang Xin Su Gang Terminal (Lianyungang XSG) from the economy of China is a joint venture invested by Jiangsu Xin Su Gang Investment and Development Co., Ltd., IMC Industrial Terminal Development and Management Co., Ltd. and Jiangsu Shagang Group Co., Ltd. The GPAS Evaluation Committee appreciated Lianyungang XSG for its great integration of green development ideas and business strategies. By implementing impressive actions, Lianyungang XSG has achieved excellent energy conservation and environmental protection.
Port of Taichung, operated by Taichung Branch of Taiwan International Ports Corporation, is the first man-made port constructed by Chinese Taipei. With dedicated green port team, Port of Taichung has conducted many significant green initiatives, leading to great succeeds in vessel emission control, wind power usage, as well as environmental management and training. These achievements have been continuously certified with EcoPort by the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) since 2015.
Qingdao New Qianwan Container Terminal (QQCTN) from the economy of China is a fully automated container terminal controlled by Qingdao Port of Shandong Port Group. The GPAS Evaluation Committee noted that QQCTN has adopted “intelligence, efficiency, safety and greenness” as its core value. Guided by this strategy on sustainable development, QQCTN has implemented a series of energy-saving and environmental protection measures, which results in obviously reductions of carbon dioxide and other pollutants.
Sapangar Bay Container Port (SBCP) from the economy of Malaysia is the premier port among the 8 ports operated by Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd. Besides of numerous green initiatives taken by SBCP, such as the electrification of RTG, LED lighting and TOS implementation, it is noted that the ecological protection is highly concerned by SBCP through community service projects. Such wonderful initiatives facilitate the seagrass planting, mangrove restoration and rehabilitation across the port area.
Terminal Internacional del Sur S.A (TISUR) from the economy of Peru, in charge of Matarani Terminal port, is the main port support in the Southern region of Peru, providing a high quality service, efficient in costs and time. It has done perfect jobs for its wastewater and solid waste management. Otherwise, the GPAS Evaluation Committee noted that TISUR has achieved Port Environment Review System (PERS) certification with ESPO and Lloyd's Register.
Terminal Portuario PERU LNG Melchorita, from the economy of Peru, consists of a liquefaction plant and a marine terminal dedicated in LNG transportation. Its sustainable strategy and policy starts from its planning, design and construction; while wastewater and waste are reused as much as possible under the operation of PERU LNG. It was awarded by Inter-American Committee on Ports of the Organization of American States with the 2016 Maritime Award of the Americas for its fantastic environmentally sustainable management of waste.
